About Groundhog Day

‘Tomorrow spring will come and then
There will be blue skies my friend
Bright eyes and laughter
Tomorrow there will be sun’

Phil Connors is a pretty awful guy.

But when the cynical Pittsburgh TV weatherman is sent to cover the eccentric annual Groundhog Day event in the small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, he finds himself caught in a time loop that sends him on a hilarious path to enlightenment and redemption.

A comic parable of love, hope and transformation from the creatives behind Matilda The Musical and The Old Vic’s A Christmas Carol, this Olivier Award-winning (Best New Musical, Best Actor) musical sensation based on the 1993 hit film returns to The Old Vic this summer.

Andy Karl reprises his role which earned him an Olivier Award as Phil Connors. ‘Groundhog Day is a masterclass in how to live… You can bring whatever mindset you choose to the next 24 hours. This is an extraordinary gift that we often overlook, and there is no better example of its priceless value than Groundhog Day’ Paul Hannam (The Wisdom of Groundhog Day)

Clever, Entertaining, Funny

See it if you want to spend an evening smiling from ear to ear. Funny, excellently staged and surprisingly heartwarming.

Don’t see it if you don’t like the notion of repetition which is really the gimmick here, but personally it didn’t get stale for me at all.

Dizzying, Great singing, Great acting, Funny, Clever

See it if you want to treat yourself to incredibly inventive stagecraft in a lightweight but fun musical

Don’t see it if you need a memorable score (nothing stuck with me on the train back from the theater) or are prudish

Great staging, Great singing, Great acting, Funny, Entertaining

See it if you want to see something light-hearted. The acting and staging are first rate and Andy Karl doesn't disappoint.

Don’t see it if you don't like to see thing repeated over and over again. That's the point of the show, but it could get irrating after so many repeats.

Great staging, Funny, Entertaining, Enchanting, Delightful

See it if you want a feel good musical, with catchy songs and brilliant staging. It's hilarious, yet also really beautiful and touching at times.

Don’t see it if you don't like repetition - songs are repeated multiple times (with slightly altered lyrics), but this is part of the plot and is done well.
